Myths that Men Believe About Women

As we grow up, we instill some beliefs in us through which we get an understanding of right or wrong. As we enter our teenage, there is a big list of things that we don’t believe in, but at the same time another list of things that we strongly believe in.

A myth is a traditional or non-traditional belief that is held through the years and can also be a false idea. Women all over the world get tangled in several myths more than anybody else. Every society has its own set of rules and restrictions for women. Men in particular have believed in several myths about women for centuries now. They have a blueprint of what they believe a woman is. It is a very sad thing to know that even after years of making so much progress, several false and misleading myths remain intact about women.

Women continue to climb the epitome of power- building their place and status as heads of state, corporate leaders and media influencers, but their minority status means that they are still harassed by society on the basis of their gender.

Myths around women

Myth No. 1

Everyone is aware of the fact that a woman’s body goes through changes during her lifetime- the menstrual cycle, her pregnancy and the menopause stage. Men, on the other hand, do not witness these kinds of hormonal changes because of which they cannot empathize or even try to understand what a woman goes through. A woman’s mood changes are bound to happen during these phases in her lifetime. However, these mood swings are heavily misunderstood and made fun of by the men. Men mistake the bodily changes during PMS as irritability and consider women as moody.

Myth No. 2

For centuries together mankind has believed that men and women are different and they play up to one another’s strength. A myth that has been believed in since time immemorial is that women are more imbibed with care and empathy than men. Such assumptions make a woman look as endlessly forgiving and emotionally vulnerable. These are nothing but gender biasness which restricts a woman to exhibit her emotions properly.

Myth No. 3

Men generally are brought up with the thought that the end goal for any woman is to become a mother someday. It is the women themselves who put this pressure on a woman to reproduce. No doubt a woman’s body is made to reproduce but that doesn’t mean being about to reproduce is the ultimate goal. Becoming a mother should not put an end to a woman’s personal growth, aspirations and developments in her life.

Myth No. 4

Most men believe that women lack confidence and that is why that’s a problem in the workplace for their career progression. Not all women lack confidence in all situations and to balance that, not all men are confident in all situations. It is socially perceived that a woman cannot behave in a stereotypically male manner in any given situation.

Myth No. 5

If “He is in love with her”- generally conveys the message that he is under her influence. Most men believe that if a man loves a woman, he is seeing her through a fog which may also mean that he is dependent on her. A man is not supposed to be in love with a woman unconditionally and generally, this is termed as blind love.

Myth No. 6

Another serious and funny myth that revolves around a woman is that a doctor can tell if a woman is a virgin or not. No matter how accurately a doctor examines a woman, a doctor can’t tell the difference between a sexually-active and non-sexually active virgin. It is not as simple as it sounds.

Myth No. 7

Menopause doesn’t cause the sex drive to end. It is a myth that when a woman enters her menopause phase, she drifts away from her sex drive. While hot flashes and other hormonal changes may make a woman temporarily not in the mood, there is no direct link between the two.

Myth No. 8

While a woman is unlikely to conceive on her period, even pregnancy is possible. Once inside a woman, sperm can wait up to a week and ovulation can occur as soon as periods end and in some cases even during the bleeding phase of a woman’s menstrual cycle.

With the kind of technological development the world is making now, such kind of regressive thinking should be done away with. There is enough science to refute the myths that revolve around women.
